I was at a girls xanga and she was talking about all of the bad stuff Iams does with animals to make better food. Is this story about animal cruelty true? If so, where can I find more info. about it and how can I help stop it?

Reply:All cheap mass marketed dog/cat foods have animal by-products in it. You need to get a better dog/cat food. Like Nutro. You can pick it up at petco or petsmart.





How can you stop it. By not buying pet foods at places like target, safeway, wal-mart.

Reply:Most dog food companies have kennels where they test their dog foods. I don't know whether the rumors and websites claiming this are true or not. Go to the IAMS website and see if they have any defense against these claims. Write them an email and explain why you're not buying their product. If people vote with their $$, companies will quickly change their ways.





I don't use "low residue" foods - they can sometimes cause intestinal problems - it's natural and healthy for the undigested materials to move out of the dog's system. I have always thought that IAMS and Eukanuba were overpriced for the quality of the ingredients - they use by-products.





Look for a food that does NOT have "by products" in the ingredients list or you'll be paying a lot of money for garbage. Personally, I like Nutro - it has no by products and is reasonably priced and my dogs have done great on it for more than 10 years. They make canned and dry dog foods for puppies and adults, and they have a new holistic line of food. Any changes in diet should be made slowly to avoid diarrhea - gradually mix more new food in with what you've been using until he's switched over.

My friend feeds her labs Canidae (www.canidae.com) and they look great! This is another all-natural, no by-product food.
Reply:the best thing to do is to feed your dog raw meat or healthy home cooked food. there is ton's of info on the web about raw feeding dogs. i give my 2 dogs raw meat almost every day and they are healthier and happier than ever before.

Reply:I agree with EightBitHero. My fiancee is a veterinary technician with many years experience in animal medicine and animal research. Usually, PETA, which is a terrorist organization - don't kid yourself, takes examples of researchers either not doing what is supposed to be protocol or information that is decades old. It would benefit researchers who do use animals to have as little variation (variables) as possible when conducting research to reach a conclusion.


Besides, how would torturing animals benefit pet food? Your friend's story might ring more true if she were referring to a cosmetic corporation or something along those lines.


As for those who don't support any sort of animal testing whatsoever, make sure you don't offer them any aspirin when they are ill, any cosmetic when they groom, or any other medical procedure when they are hospitalized. Oh, and make sure they don't eat meat or dairy (eggs included), along with jello, don't wear leather or cotton, don't live in a home that required land to be leveled or moved, and don't eat salad for that matter since it takes food away from herbivores.
Reply:Alrighty. I hate to break it to you, but it's true. Go onto PETA's website and check it out. PETA is not just a small group of extremists who go around pouring blood on fur coats. They really do know what they're talking about, and if you delve into the website further, you'll uncover some horrifying things. Plus PETA isn't the only site that has this info. Google it, and you'll come up with alot of stuff too.

Reply:I heard that story too. I fed my dog and cats on it. I stopped buying it. If we all stop buying it the company would go out of business and the animal cruelty would stop
Reply:Stuff like this is usually just PeTA lies. I wouldn't believe it without researching first.
Reply:I have heard that, but, unfortunately, it is the only think my little pekepoo can eat without getting sick. I'd like to get him on Science Diet, which is the best, but it makes him throw up. If you want to stop it, write the IAMS company or go to their website and e-mail them about your concerns with the animal testing.
